The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is a framework that sets standards for the learning, development, and care of children from birth to the age of five. It is implemented in early years settings, including nurseries, preschools, and reception classes in primary schools. The EYFS focuses on providing a nurturing and stimulating environment where children can learn through play, exploration, and social interaction. The framework is based on four guiding principles: every child is unique, positive relationships are crucial, children learn best through play, and the importance of enabling environments.

The EYFS encompasses seven areas of learning and development: three prime areas (communication and language, physical development, and personal, social and emotional development) and four specific areas (literacy, mathematics, understanding the world, and expressive arts and design). The EYFS emphasizes the holistic development of children, taking into account their individual needs and interests, and aims to lay a strong foundation for future learning and success.
